The Rotation

My Dad Shoe Rotation: The 6-Pair Capsule Every Grown Man Needs

By Dad Shoe Matt ·

I've been following sneakers for about 30 years. Somewhere along the way I figured out that a grown man doesn't need a closet full of shoes. He needs the right six pairs.

That's the whole idea behind Dad Shoe Rotation. Six slots, each with a job. One pair for every day, one for the gym, one for date night, one for work, one boot, and one wildcard. Cover those and you can walk into just about any part of your week looking put together and feeling good on your feet.

How the rotation works

Here's the rule. Every shoe I review on the channel gets rated. If a shoe earns the top rating, it takes a spot in the rotation and the pair in that slot steps aside. That keeps the list honest. Nothing gets in just because it's new or because somebody's talking about it.

The one exception is the wildcard slot. That one is supposed to change. It's where I have a little fun, so expect it to turn over every year or two.

Six pairs. Each one has a job. If a better shoe earns the spot, it gets the spot.

Slot 1: The Everyday Dad Shoe

If you could only own one pair, this is it. It has to work almost anywhere, and comfort, support, and durability come first. Since this will be your most-worn shoe, I recommend a slip-in or step-in, ideally leather. My pick is the Nike Air Force 1 Low FlyEase / EasyOn. Nike discontinued it, so you’ll find it on StockX now. The Skechers Aeroburst is another option.

Slot 2: The Workout Shoe

This one depends on what you actually do. It could be a running shoe, a pickleball shoe, or a hoops shoe. Hyrox shoes are popular because one pair handles all of it. I do treadmill walking, weights, and plyometrics, so mine is the adidas Adizero Dropset Pro.

Slot 3: The Clean White Sneaker

This should be the most expensive shoe in your rotation. Go designer, go white leather, keep them clean, and save them for date nights and church. Black leather works too, but not brown, because brown won't go with everything. Mine are Magnanni white leather sneakers.

Slot 4: The Work Dress Shoe

You need a quality leather lace-up oxford that lasts at least five years, depending on how often you wear it to work. If you already own sneaker-soled brown leather oxfords, they're fine for now, but don't buy them new. For comfort, get a sneaker-like insole but not a sneaker-like midsole. Add an aftermarket insole like Move, or buy from Cole Haan or Wolf & Shepherd, but never a sneaker-type midsole. Mine are Allen Edmonds oxfords.

Slot 5: The Boot (optional)

You don't need one in this slot unless you work out of a truck. If you do, this is your work boot. If you don't, you've got options: a suede chukka, a cowboy boot, or, if you're a buy-it-for-life guy, a really nice lace-up leather boot from Red Wing or a similar brand that lasts forever. Me? I'm still deciding between my brown suede chukkas and my black Tecovas cowboy boots. You can help me pick.

Slot 6: The Wildcard (Retro Runner, for now)

Think of this as a slightly elevated version of your everyday shoe in a more fashion-forward retro design. This slot will change regularly, so don't expect a pair to last more than a year or two. My recommendation is the Brooks Adrenaline GTS 4, but it doesn't come in my size 14. So I'm phasing out my ASICS Gel-Kayano 14 for the On Cloudtilt Arc.

That's the rotation

Six pairs, each with a job. As I review more shoes, some of these will get bumped, and I'll tell you when and why. If you've got a shoe you think deserves a shot at one of these slots, come find me on YouTube or TikTok and let me know.
